Motivation is the process that propels individuals toward action, achievement, and growth— it is the light that transforms dreams into goals and goals into achievement. When lacking motivation, even the brightest individuals may struggle to realize their full potential. Understanding how motivation works—and how to tap into motivation—can be the difference between success and failure in all areas of life.
Understanding of Motivation
At its essence, motivation is what compels and predisposes us to behave. Motivation can be either intrinsically motivated or extrinsically motivated. Intrinsic motivation feeds on internal sources of satisfaction- such as, enjoyment in learning new things, getting better, or helping others– whereas extrinsic motivation feeds on outside sources of reward such as money, acknowledgment, or praise. Each type of motivation is crucial to motivating behavior, however motivationally driven behaviors that are intrinsically motivated, tends to cause deeper, more lasting fulfillment.
The Role of Goals and Purpose
Having strong purpose, provides direction for motivation. When people create meaningful goals, purpose provides direction to their life, as it creates a GPS of sorts for behavior, and reinforces the will/drive to persist toward one’s goals. Purpose acts as a directional tool and keeps us focused on what is important when things get tough and motivation fades- without purpose, the “why,” motivation will fade rapidly. Thus, linking one’s personal values to the goal is crucial.
Overcoming Obstacles with Motivation
There will always be obstacles on the path to success. The difference between those that quit and those that persist is often motivation. Remaining motivated isn’t about pretending that obstacles don’t exist. Rather, it’s about perceiving these obstacles as learning opportunities and growth experiences. Positive thinking, faith in oneself, and adaptability are all essential mechanisms that help sustain motivation, even in the absence of progress.
The Daily Habit
Motivation might get you started, but the habits keep you going. When you create small, manageable, and consistent habits, you can sustain momentum over months and years. Whether it’s reading consistently, exercising more, or simply making time to improve yourself, you can develop positive habits that support and reinforce your motivations. Over time, these small habits add up to significant progress.
Motivation is Contagious
Motivation is contagious. When leaders, teachers, family members, or parents engage with passion and conviction, they can often motivate others; we all have the ability to inspire others to engage with the same mindset. When we share our stories of perseverance, grit, or success, we provide reassurance that anyone can achieve greatness if they are willing to work for it.
